Make no mistake: I’m super proud of “Cook, Serve, Delicious!” If anything it shows just how wonderful Game Maker can be- whether you’re one of the best or worst coders out there, you can get some damn amazing results regardless. That’s why I’ve included a small code guide in the Included Files of the GMZ file, so that you can see how I’m coding CSD 2 and what to avoid in your own projects.
I know this because it helped greatly in the planning of CSD 2- how to code it properly, how to dodge past mistakes I did with the first, all kinds of mistakes I knew to avoid. I think that, just as much as a finely coded game can be a huge educational resource, a terribly coded game can provide some good insight and caution. When I was asked about this year’s bundle, I readily accepted. Given how transparent I strive to be- from game development updates to posting the financials of my commercial games on Gamasutra, long before SteamSpy- passing on being in the bundle was something I regretted for quite a long time. But the actual reason was that I was ashamed of my coding technique.
My official reason was because I was still selling the game and I didn’t want the source code to be freely available like that. YoYo Games originally approached me to be a part of the Game Maker bundle last year, which I declined. I’m thrilled to announce “Cook, Serve, Delicious! Game Maker Edition” is now exclusively available for the Humble Game Maker Bundle! It is the GMZ source code for the original game’s release for use in Game Maker Studio, along with a small code guide explaining all of my mistakes.
